Dear
AeA Members & Friends,AeA once
again partnered with the State of California to host four regional Town
Hall meetings to continue a dialogue that started in 2005 to offer
insights on doing business with the state, which is one of the world's
largest buyers of technology goods and services.
Nearly 200 IT professionals attended these
forums to share their views and discuss process improvement options with
Teri Takai, California’s State CIO; Will Bush, Director of the Department
of General Services (DGS); P.K. Agarwal, Director of Technology Services;
Adrian Farley, Deputy Director of Procurement, DGS; Jim Butler, the new
Director of Procurement for DGS; and numerous other senior state
contracting officials.
“Opportunities for industry representatives to directly interface with key
decision makers are a crucial component to ensuring that California is on
the correct path when making appropriate and effective decisions
pertaining to California’s IT procurement process,” said Roxanne Gould,
AeA’s Senior Vice President of State Government Affairs. “Through the town
halls, we are able to take time to thoroughly review and evaluate current
procurement processes, examine what’s working, and identify areas for
improvement.”
"We have completed the series of IT
Procurement Town Halls around the state and we have come away with some
very good insights on how to improve the current process," said Teri Takai,
Chief Information Officer for the State of California. "We thank AeA for
organizing these events and look forward to continue working with them on
these and other IT issues."
When the events began in 2005, they
resulted in two AeA-sponsored bills being signed into law: SB 954
(Figueroa, 2005), which outlined processes for solution-based procurements
and a risk assessment model; and SB 834 (Figueroa, 2006), which created a
cabinet-level State Chief Information Officer – the position that is now
filled by Ms. Takai.
Please join us in advancing the business of technology.
Regards,
Don Hicks
AeA/OC Executive Director

Policy Matters |

AeA Member Deloitte shares IFRS
perspective and what tech companies should begin considering as the
adoption date approaches
With
the rapid adoption of IFRS worldwide, the prospect of a "global GAAP"
has moved from a lofty vision to a practical reality. The SEC has
initiated a dialogue with the U.S. financial community as to whether
application of IFRS by U.S. registrants should be prohibited,
optional, or required. No consensus has been reached; however, many
believe that IFRS, presented initially as an option, will arrive no
later than 2011, thereby creating an important stepping stone for
mandatory adoption in the United States sometime thereafter. SEC
Chairman Christopher Cox’s recent remarks on the need for a "public
policy oversight body" to watch over the IFRS only add further
credibility to those beliefs.
As we await the SEC decision, we at
Deloitte continue to keep our clients informed of the latest
developments and resources available. We encourage you to reach out
to us with any questions you may have. With that in mind, please see
the descriptions and links below for the most recent IFRS
publications: the July 2008 IFRS Insights newsletter and the IFRS
Tax Point of View.
1. July 2008 IFRS Insights - This is

2. IFRS Tax Point of View (POV) -
This POV discusses the tax accounting, planning and operational
aspects of IFRS, including the areas expected to converge and
potential areas of divergence, the need to re-evaluate tax
accounting methods, the potential impact on global tax planning, and
transition and implementation issues. To access the POV document,

Accelerate the Knowledge Curve: If one word could define sales
and marketing at today’s technology companies, accelerate aptly
applies. Senior sales and marketing executives are under more
pressure than ever before to execute, with higher expectations for
returns and fewer resources to swiftly handle it all. It’s no wonder
you question whether your competition knows something you don’t
about sales and marketing in this pressure-cooker environment.
You’re invited to find out. Join other sales and marketing
executives for breakfast Tuesday, August 12, at the AeA Marketing
Roundtable.
What to Expect: No sales pitch. No agenda. No talking heads.
Simply fresh knowledge you could apply immediately, shared by
senior professionals like you who are working in the trenches.
Expect answers, insights and connections
You’ll hear straight talk — in an uncensored forum — about the
sales and marketing issues, trends and practices shaping technology
companies.
You’ll get practical answers from leaders just like you who are
responsible for introducing products, building sales channels,
creating demand and navigating today’s shifting media sphere. You
know it will have real value because you’ll be sharing your true
insight with your peers.
This roundtable will be a revealing discussion with the
influential senior sales and marketing executives who are leading
technology companies in Orange County and the Inland Empire.
Together, we will tackle your most vexing issues and share our
best-kept secrets for success in a rapid-fire exchange.
Expected topics, moderated by WunderMarx CEO Cara Good, will cover:
Which sales techniques are yielding the highest productivity
and profitability
Who is advancing from current trends in marketing media
How consumer generated media is influencing buying decisions –
and why B2B technology companies can’t afford to overlook social
media
Why PR is more important than ever
What you can do to drive outstanding results from your
organization
Plus your most-important questions and answers
Come prepared to share two of your best sales and/or marketing
ideas and ask one question to challenge your colleagues. We’ll also

development...register today! Entry and breakfast is complimentary,

AeA Orange County HR
Roundtable:
Dangerous Documents - What you don’t know CAN hurt you!
Mark your calendar September 9, 2008, for the next
AeA Orange County HR Roundtable: Dangerous Documents - What You
Don't Know CAN Hurt You!
at
EADS North America Defense
Test & Services,
Irvine, CA.
This program will address how common
documents, including, employment-related documents, have the
potential to come back to haunt you, and what steps you can take
today to avoid tomorrow’s headaches. We will present some key
challenges and approaches to this issue and offer tips on how you
can avoid simple errors that can lead to costly lawsuits.
Who Should Attend…
This program is designed for senior level managers and HR
personnel who need:
Effective strategies for identifying and addressing legal
risks created by your company’s documentation process.
Employee policies to ensure your staff understands corporate
email is not entitled to privacy protection.
Legal recommendations on how to win litigation if these
methods fail.
Topics to be discussed, led by expert attorneys Bruce May,
Partner at Stradling, Yocca, Carlson, & Rauth and Dale Hudson,
Counsel at Nixon Peabody include the following:
- What dangerous
documents exist in your company’s files?
Which documents are the most
trouble?
How can you avoid turning your
company’s documents into dangerous documents?
What tools can you provide your
managers to help them comply with legal do’s and don’ts? H
How emails have become a company’s
nightmare and a lawyer’s dream.
What can your company do to minimize legal risks created by
emails?
With email and other computer-generated
records among the most dangerous of company records, we will examine
best practices for handling these. While often written hastily as a
substitute for a telephone call, recent legal developments have
shown that email can be used in litigation in ways and with
interpretations never intended by the author.
